The most common bleeding hemorrhoid symptoms are bright streaks of blood on toilet paper when wiping, bleeding during bowel movements, itching and rectal pain.

Since pain isn’t normally associated with small internal bleeding hemorrhoids, the main symptoms of internal bleeding hemorrhoids are rectal bleeding that is bright red and leaves streaks on toilet paper when wiping as well as in the toilet after a bowel movement. There may also be blood on the surface of the stool.

Other internal bleeding hemorrhoid symptoms may include mucus and irritation from larger internal hemorrhoids that bulge from the anus. Discomfort from the bulging of the hemorrhoid in the end portion of the anal canal which may cause a feeling of having an urge to pass stool even after just having a bowel movement.
While most internal hemorrhoids don’t cause pain, large ones that bulge from the anus can become quite painful when they swell and protrude from the anus. Unfortunately, the larger the hemorrhoid usually means the greater the pain. Sometimes when the hemorrhoids bugle, they can be pinched by the muscles that control the anus. This can be very painful. If severe pain occurs, it may mean that the blood supply to the bleeding hemorrhoid has been cut off and urgent medical attention and surgery is needed to keep the tissue from dying. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid and is a very serious, but rare condition.

While the above symptoms are normally associated with bleeding hemorrhoids, please note that there are other serious conditions that may also cause rectal bleeding and changes in bowel habits and stool such as colon, rectal and anal cancer. Adults over age 50 and others with family histories of these cancers should definitely seek advice from their physicians when experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned before starting at-home treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids.

Before we can discuss bleeding hemorrhoids, let’s first learn what hemorrhoids are.

In short, hemorrhoids are veins in the anal canal that become swollen.

To help with controlling bowel movements, the tissue inside the anus fills with blood. Often if there’s straining involved to move stool, the increase in pressure may cause the veins in the tissue to become swollen and to stretch.

When this happens it can lead to hemorrhoids. When the veins swell on the inside of the anal canal, the result is internal hemorrhoids. When the veins swell on the outer opening of the anus, they’re called, external hemorrhoids. It’s possible to have both internal and external hemorrhoids at once.

Once hemorrhoids occur, it’s also possible that they may become bleeding hemorrhoids.

What are bleeding hemroids?

While some hemorrhoids clear up on their own, there are other types that may become more serious. While it’s rare, some hemorrhoids may even need emergency surgery. These hemorrhiods are called strangulated hemorrhoids.

Bleeding internal hemorrhoids should be evaluated by a physician. Rectal bleeding can be a sign of very serious conditions so it’s important to be sure what the source of the bleeding is.

Also, once diagnosed, it’s sometimes necessary to involve medical intervention to stop bleeding hemorrhoids.  There are several types of  medical bleeding hemorrhoids treatment and your doctor will help you decide which one is best for your situation.

Usually, if you’re under the age of 50 and the bleeding is minimal and only occurs during bowel movements (bright red blood spotting on toilet paper) it’s okay to wait a week and attempt some home treatments before seeing your doctor. Again, only do this if you’re fairly positive the blood is being released from hemorrhoids.
