The treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids should first begin with a firm diagnosis. Because rectal bleeding can be a sign of some very serious conditions that require medical attention. For this reason, please be sure the source of rectal bleeding is indeed from bleeding hemorrhoids. Once you are sure of the source of rectal bleeding, your doctor will advise a plan of treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids or, if you are sure the bleeding is from this condition, then you can begin your own at home treatment plan.

For pain, it’s best to avoid aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medications as they can cause more bleeding from the hemorrhoids. Instead, choose acetaminophen tablets such as Tylenol. Normally, small internal bleeding hemorrhoids treatment will only require over the counter pain relievers and a change in diet and bathroom habits.

For constipation, it is important to eat more fiber and drink plenty of water. Constipation and straining to have a bowel movement is usually the cause of bleeding hemorrhoids. Treatment plans must include a change in diet to help prevent a reoccurrence of hemorrhoids. Drink at least 6-8 glasses of water and avoid alcohol as it can cause dehydration.

Again, in order for treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids to be effective it’s important to prevent them from returning by keeping a healthy lifestyle and avoid straining when passing stool. Don’t sit too long. Get up and get a little exercise. Drink water and try again later. Don’t hold it in too long either because that can cause straining later.

For swelling, itching and other discomfort, try daily sitz baths at least 3 times daily. A sitz bath is a hot (not too hot) soaking bath in which the water is filled only high enough to cover the affected area. Soaking for 15 minutes up to several times each day will keep the area clean, promote healing and ease discomfort.

To make the sitz bath part of your treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids easier and quicker, purchase an inexpensive (usually anywhere from $10-$20) plastic sitz bath basin. These can be purchased online or in your local pharmacy. They’re made to fit into the seat on the toilet to make soaking easy and to save on water because filling a large bathtub with 3-4 inches of water several times a day can take a lot of time and use a lot of water. These sitz bath tubs are quick and easy to fill and empty and rinse clean for the next soaking session.

Many physicians suggest adding salt to the sitz bath or baking soda. Please check with your doctor before adding ingredients to your sitz bath. There are also over the counter hemorrhoid creams for external bleeding hemorrhoids treatment. Please follow directions carefully.

Often the treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids at home has a successful outcome however, if after one week, symptoms are not improving, please contact your doctor. Also, if an internal bleeding hemorrhoid swells and bulges through the anus and becomes extremely painful, this could be a strangulated hemorrhoid. Strangulated hemorrhoids are a very serious condition and require urgent medical attention.

While there are a few medical procedures your doctor may discuss with you, normally the first stages of treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids begins with a combination of diet and lifestyle change along with some over the counter medications and relaxing, healing sitz baths.

While most small bleeding internal hemorrhoids won’t grow large enough to be terribly bothersome, large ones may bulge and come through the opening of the anus. They may go back in after a bowel movement or at worst, they may remain out. If possible, you may have to push them back in.

Sometimes, albeit rarely, the internal bleeding hemorrhoids may bulge through and swell on the outside of the anus. If this happens and the muscles that control the opening and the closing of the anus may pinch and subsequently cut off the blood supply to the hemorrhoid. If this happens it will require urgent surgery because the hemorrhoid is now a strangulated hemorrhoid and there is danger that the tissue could die and further complications such as infection could arise. This will cause sever pain. Please see your doctor immediately if this happens.

Internal bleeding hemorrhoids are enclosed in a mucous membrane and occur above the dentate line in the anal canal. The most common symptom of internal bleeding hemorrhoids is rectal bleeding. The bleeding is bright red and may be found on the toilet paper when wiping, in the toilet water and on the surface of the stool. Be sure that if rectal bleeding occurs, you are diagnosed with internal bleeding hemorrhoids because rectal bleeding may also be a sign of very serious illness that needs attention.

Once diagnosed, if bleeding isn’t stopping with suggested at home bleeding internal hemorrhoids treatment, your doctor may wish to perform medical procedures to aid in healing.

These medical procedures may be fixative (without surgery) or may include surgery in which anesthesia is involved. Before any invasive medical treatments are undertaken, most physicians will first attempt the fixative approaches.

The fixative measures include Rubber band ligation which is a procedure during which the hemorrhoid is tied off with small rubber bands which cuts off the blood supply and ends in the hemorrhoid shrinking, dying and falling off usually within a week

Another fixative procedure is laser coagulation in which the blood supply is cut off by the laser which creates scar tissue. Laser procedures are usually a bit more expensive.

The most common bleeding hemorrhoid symptoms are bright streaks of blood on toilet paper when wiping, bleeding during bowel movements, itching and rectal pain.

Since pain isn’t normally associated with small internal bleeding hemorrhoids, the main symptoms of internal bleeding hemorrhoids are rectal bleeding that is bright red and leaves streaks on toilet paper when wiping as well as in the toilet after a bowel movement. There may also be blood on the surface of the stool.

Other internal bleeding hemorrhoid symptoms may include mucus and irritation from larger internal hemorrhoids that bulge from the anus. Discomfort from the bulging of the hemorrhoid in the end portion of the anal canal which may cause a feeling of having an urge to pass stool even after just having a bowel movement.
While most internal hemorrhoids don’t cause pain, large ones that bulge from the anus can become quite painful when they swell and protrude from the anus. Unfortunately, the larger the hemorrhoid usually means the greater the pain. Sometimes when the hemorrhoids bugle, they can be pinched by the muscles that control the anus. This can be very painful. If severe pain occurs, it may mean that the blood supply to the bleeding hemorrhoid has been cut off and urgent medical attention and surgery is needed to keep the tissue from dying. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid and is a very serious, but rare condition.

While the above symptoms are normally associated with bleeding hemorrhoids, please note that there are other serious conditions that may also cause rectal bleeding and changes in bowel habits and stool such as colon, rectal and anal cancer. Adults over age 50 and others with family histories of these cancers should definitely seek advice from their physicians when experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned before starting at-home treatment for bleeding hemorrhoids.

Internal bleeding hemorrhoids are normally small, swollen veins that are in the wall of the anal canal. Of course, that said, they can also be fairly large, sagging, bulging veins that are there all the time. If they bulge out and are then squeezed by the muscles in the anus, it can be a painful experience. If the blood supply to the hemorrhoids is cut off, it can become even more painful.

With internal hemorrhoids bleeding may cause blood as well as mucus on the toilet paper and on the stool after bowel movements. The small internal hemorrhoids may not grow and may not bulge if pressure on the bowels is minimized.

When internal bleeding hemorrhoids are large, they may bulge from the anus and after bowel movements it may be necessary to gently push them back in. Sometimes they remain outside the anus, and in some rarer cases, internal hemorrhoids may bugle out and then swell.

As previously mentioned, the muscles that control the opening of the anus, and it’s closing, may cut off the blood supply to bulging, swollen hemorrhoids. This is called a strangulated hemorrhoid and the hemorrhoid tissue may die. This is a painful occurrence and may cause pus and blood at the anus and will need immediate medical attention and emergency surgery to prevent death of the tissue and subsequent dangerous infection.

The above is an emergency situation and a rare one.
Bleeding internal hemorrhoids treatment may sometimes call for surgery but only as a last resort.

Please be sure to check with your physician to verify the source of bleeding from the rectum as while it is a symptom of bleeding internal hemorrhoids, it may also be a symptom of a much more serious condition.
